History
Daerwynno centre was built many years ago as a typical
hill farm and inhabited until the 1950s. Most of the farm
buildings were demolished soon afterwards, except for the
two buildings we see today. These, together with a toilet
block built in the seventies, form the residential part
of the centre.
The renovation of the derelict buildings started
in about 1995, when the Cwm Clydach Outdoor Activity Group,
a voluntary organisation, started working on the premises.
After a few years of hard work the centre had its official
opening in July 1997. The following years saw a steady increase
in the number of visitors and in the activities provided.
The centre was awarded a substantial grant in 2003, which
provided for an outdoor rock-climbing boulder to be constructed
within its grounds, and for improved paths and tracks throughout
the surrounding forest.
By 2004 high numbers of visitors placed huge demands on
the volunteers and eventually led to employing part-time
staff at the centre, funded by grant-giving bodies.
The centre is now able to offer many aspects of outdoor
education to all, throughout the year.
